Science needs money to advance. It is an illusion to believe that science has ever been able to rely on wealthy individuals, doing research as a hobby. The main part of the scientific community has always been professionals, when science was pursued at all. The hobby researchers bringing a welcome fresh air, but never representing the main part of the conservators, transmitters. Thus science will advance only if financial means for it are available.
